PLE 101 - Pointers for Parents New to PLE

Thursday Packets:
These are sent home with the child every Thursday. Parents are asked to look through the papers included in the packet. You will find your child’s work from the week as well as information from Lee’s Summit Parks & Rec. as well as other outside groups like scouts. Please initial the outside sheet on the Thursday packet and return it to school with your child the next school day.

Dismissal:
Dismissal is as follows: Walkers, Bus Riders, and Car Riders. If you are picking your child up, pull around to the north side of the building and wait in the car rider line. If your child is riding home with someone else or going with a friend to a different bus stop, we need signed notes from BOTH parents specifying what the plan is.

Communications:
Sending notes is a great way to communicate with the teacher. Place notes in an envelope with teacher’s name and send it with your student. Remind your child to give the note to the teacher as the teachers do not have time to check all backpacks for notes. Also, you can call the school and leave a voice message for the teacher or you can email the teacher as they all have email access. Teachers will notify you of their voice mail extension and email address. Bi-monthly you will receive our Pleasantly Yours. Tiger Tales, which is a monthly newsletter, will also come home in Thursday Packets from the office. These are both great resources, so make sure you read them.

Notes:
If a student has something to be delivered to the office (paperwork, etc.) they may drop it off at the office before going to class. The best way to send notes, paperwork, etc. is by putting it in an envelope with child’s name, grade and teacher’s name on it.

School Store:
Will be open one day per week before school. Students can buy pencils, erasers, paper, etc. PTA volunteers run the store and will be happy to help your child.

Doughnut Days:
There are several early release days during the school year. Breakfast is not served in the cafeteria on these days. Student Council does sell doughnuts on these days for $.50/each. Sales are done when students enter the building and they can take their doughnuts to class to eat them. Student Council will send out reminders before each Doughnut Day event. (Please watch for the notes because there are a couple of early release days when they do not sell the doughnuts.)

Mom & Dad's Breakfast:
Theses are special light breakfast times for you and your child(ren). Mom’s breakfast is scheduled in February and Dad’s breakfast is going to be held in March. There is a small fee charged at these events. Parking is encouraged on
the North Playground. You can then enter through the gym doors.

Grandparents/Special Friend Day:
This is an event scheduled in the spring when students are encouraged to invite their grandparents or a special friend to come and have a light breakfast and tour our building before school starts for the day. Again, parking is encouraged on the North Playground and guests can enter through the gym doors.

Spotlight Night:
These nights are held by grade level at the beginning of the school year. It is a time for parents to come and become acquainted with the classroom, the curriculum, and the classroom expectations. Sixth grade students accompany their parents but the other grade levels are for parents only. Please watch for a note from your child’s teacher regarding date and time of this event.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:
These conferences usually last about 15 minutes and are held in October each year. You will sign up for a specific time during your Spotlight Night visit. The teacher will send out more information on conferences as the time draws near. This is a PARENT ONLY event too.

PLE Family Picnic:
PTA sponsors a Back To School Family Picnic in September. PTA provides the hot dogs and drinks and we ask families to supply the chips, veggies, and desserts to share. A flyer from PTA will be coming home in Thursday Packets before the event. Your whole family is welcome! Don’t forget your blankets and/or lawn chairs.

Skate Night:
PTA sponsors a PLE Skate Night at Landmark Skate Rink in Lee’s Summit usually once per month. There is a small charge for this event and part of the proceeds goes back to the PTA. Parents are responsible for chaperoning their children. Please do not drop your children off, a parent or other adult must stay with the children. Siblings and parents are welcome to skate!

PTA Meetings:
PTA Unit meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month and are usually followed by a performance from one or more grade levels or musical groups. There is not a meeting in January. ANY PARENT CAN ATTEND AND YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO GET INVOLVED. PTA Board Meetings are usually held the Thursday night before the Unit Meeting. Board Meetings are about one hour long and all are invited to attend these as well. Watch your Thursday Packets for more information.

PTA Membership:
PTA memberships are sold at Meet Your Teacher as well as through forms sent home in Thursday Packets the first months of school. Your PTA membership entitles you to a free copy of the Student Directory as well as helping the PTA fund it’s various activities. It is a wonderful way to become involved in your child’s school life.

Report Cards:
You will be given your child’s first report card at Parent/Teacher Conferences in October. The next 3 report cards will be sent home at the end of each quarter. The child will bring them home in a small envelope in their Thursday Packet. You may keep the report card. We do ask that you sign the envelope and return it to school with your child.

HY-Vee & General Mills Box Top Collections:
PTA collects Hy-Vee receipts from both Lee’s Summit locations as well as General Mills Box Tops for Education and Inkjet and laser cartridges. There are collection receptacles outside the office. We encourage you to send these items to school with your student. Monies raised through these collections help fund classroom activities. Click here for these and other fund raising activities.

Room Parents:
Each teacher’s classroom is in need of a room parent. This is a great way to get involved with your child’s class and to meet other parents. There will be a sign up sheet at Meet Your Teacher and again at Spotlight Night. Along with the room parent, several volunteers are needed to assist with individual classroom activities. For more information about volunteering for individual classroom events, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

WATCHDOGS:
This is a program especially designed to get dads involved in school activities. Dads are invited to come to school and volunteer their time to help within the school building and be a positive role model to the student they come in contact with. The dads we have in the program love the time they spend at school!

Volunteers:
PTA and the school are always looking for volunteers to help with several different activities as your time permits. We have volunteers who help in the classroom, the library and other activities in the building. If you would like to lend a hand, there is a short training session you will need to attend and then we’ll put you to work!

School Pictures:
Pictures are usually taken in the September. All students’ pictures are taken at this time but you MUST PREPAY for any package of pictures you may want to purchase. If the pictures are not what you like, we do have a retake date that will be set for both retakes and students that were absent or new to the school after Picture Day. Information on Picture Day will be sent home in Thursday Packets. Spring pictures are usually taken in March and ARE NOT prepaid.

Lost & Found:
The Lost & Found box is located near the office. You are encouraged to come up to school and check the box for missing coats, gloves, and hats at your convenience. Quarterly, we display the lost & found items for students to check for missing items. Please make sure your child’s coat, backpack, and lunch boxes are clearly marked with your child’s name.

Fund Raisers:
PTA will sponsor fund raisers during the school year. There will be one or two depending on the projects they are sponsoring. This past year, we had 2 fund raisers to help support technology needs in the building. Student Council, Kids Country, and Lee’s Summit Education Foundation also sponsor fund raisers throughout the year as well. Click Here for more information on current PLE fund raising activities.

BEST ADVICE-Take time and read all the information that comes home in the Thursday Packet and call the school office if you have any questions.
